How secure are data centres?

Data centres are designed to assure that servers and the data housed on them are protected from environmental hazards and security breaches. Data centres have 24 hours a day 365 days a year security cover across the whole facility.

Pressure sensors are placed under the floor and there are also motion detectors, which make the data centre even more secure.

The centre will contain protection equipment in case of fires to make sure that any potential hazard is detected at the very earliest stage.

There is also full CCTV coverage across external areas and all internal floors/suites. Security guards and roaming patrols monitor on site and across all buildings.

How do you get into data centres?

You should firstly contact the company that owns the data centre at least 24 hours before you want to view it. The company will then give you the details of what it is they require in order to allow anyone into the facility.

If a client has their own rack space within the data centre then they should contact them directly and provide details of each person arriving. If a client has a server or solution that is provided by the ISP then they need to be contacted first.

The security guards check photo ID’s on arrival at the data centre, and then ask each person to sign in with their details.

A security guard would then allow these people access to the facility, letting engineers access their equipment directly, or the ISP providing the space would provide their own engineer to accompany the visitors to the equipment.
